This obituary is about Cordelia Scaife May, the 363rd richest person in America. But that was last year. I liked how the article directly got at who she was, in case readers knew of the Mellon banking empire. I’m not sure if it needed so much about her secret marriage to Robert Duggan. He stole a whole small paragraph from the deceased. Poor Cordelia.
Unfortunately not confirmed yet, but I’ll probably write an obit for my brother (Phil Strelow). If not him then another relative I can easily convince to let me do this.
1. After being assigned a story, if possible, go to the morgue or newspaper library.
2. One potential problem is that copyright laws have to be obeyed. Another is that sometimes not all articles from a paper are included in databases – wire service and market reports, death notices, box scores, social announcements and freelance work are often excluded.
