UWO-Vollyball

Clapping, cheering and a rhythmic team chants was the scene Friday night at Kolf Sports Center where highly ranked UWO Men's Volleyball Team faced off against Lakeland in a match to determine seeding for the Wisconsin Volleyball Conference 2005 State Championship. This was the first year UWO hosted the state championship.

Prior to the Lakeland match, UWO sweep UW-Whitewater 2-0 ealier that evening. After the chants started to diminish and you could almost see the adrenaline pumping through the player's veins, it was time to play volleyball.

After two thunderous spikes by Lakeland's Grant Marlow and Matt Martin, with the score 5-3 in Lakeland's favor,UWO Coach Brian Schaefer called a timeout to regroup his troops.

"We started out flat and the momentum was clearly in Lakeland's favor," said Schaefer.

After the timeout and a few "choice" words from Schaefer, UWO came back with great net play from Mike Semrad and Jeff Thomas. The set went back and forth with no team having the clear advantage. Both UWO and Lakeland just couldn't find the line do to many missed opportunities.

As the set neared set point both teams were all tied up 23-23. Spikes by Thomas and Lakeland's Jon Lewicki gave both teams the offensive, but it was hard to pull ahead with great blocking on the nets by both teams.

The score 25-25, UWO looked toward ((( some v-ball lingo))) Thomas, who have the last two spikes of the game to lead the Titans to a 27-25 victory.
